Gymnastics Classes

All classes run to British gymnastics guidelines and policies. The ratios of gymnasts to coach are 8:1 on equipment and 15:1 when on the floor. The club aims to have these ratios as a minimum standard. Classes are pre-planned on a termly basis and the contents are designed to both encourage progression and provide opportunity to try a range of disciplines before leading in to specialisation when gymnasts get older or enter squad groups.
Gymnastics classes are split in to rising 5’s, beginners, Intermediate and advanced classes. No previous gymnastics experience is needed to enter a rising 5’s or beginners group.
We also have teen gym classes that cater exclusively for gymnasts at senior school and development classes by invitation for those who show talent for gymnastics and commitment to working hard to get in to the club squad.
Gymnasts get the opportunity each term to try out for a British gymnastics proficiency award and may take part in club competitions and displays.

RISING 5’s:
The rising 5’s class is designed to be a transition from pre-school style themed activities to a more formal structured gymnastics class.
Games that are firm favourites with our pre-school groups are still played but they are mixed in with the basics required of gymnasts in our beginners classes.
There is an emphasis on safety in the gym and using apparatus in a controlled manner as well as learning new skills.

BEGINNERS:
These classes are for children of school age who have no or little gymnastics experience.
The classes teach gymnasts basic shapes and how to use the equipment.
Gymnasts develop basic co-ordination skills that can be used in many sports. There is opportunity to work towards British Gymnastics badges. Gymnasts from this class can be selected by the coaches to join the development squads.

INTERMEDIATE:
Intermediate classes are designed for gymnasts who have attended gymnastics classes and understand basic terminology and can do basic skills. Gymnasts are invited to attend the annual gymnastics festival and work towards British Gymnastics Badges. Gymnasts are selected from these classes for our development groups.

ADVANCED:
These classes are for gymnasts who are experienced and have a sound knowledge of basic skills, they work towards the British gymnastics medal schemes and can try out for the team (Squad) in Bi-annual trials.
These gymnasts also compete in the annual club competition and have the opportunity to enter basic inter club competitions.

TEEN GYM (age 11 +):
These classes are only for gymnasts of senior school age who have either come up through the club classes or want to start gymnastics as a new hobby.
Gymnasts at teen gym can either form part of a team working towards the club championships and displays or they can simply train for fun. They can choose for themselves what they want to learn.
This class can be helpful for those doing gymnastics assessments in GCSE PE as coaches can help with the skills needed and to choreograph routines.

DEVELOPMENT GROUPS (age 5 +)
These classes are for gymnasts ho show potential to be part of our squad or who would like to work towards being part of the squad groups.
The classes concentrate on posture, basic skills and strength and flexibility training.
The development sessions are a second session in the week, gymnasts should attend another class to keep the fun in their gym.
These classes are by invitation only but if your child is showing a particular interest in gymnastics please ask a coach if he / she can have a trial in a development group.
